Moody Bible Institute is driven by the belief that people committed to living and declaring the Word of God can actually change the world. Our core ministries—education, publishing and radio—exist to equip people with the truth of God's Word to be maturing followers of Christ who are making disciples around the world by proclaiming the good news of the gospel.

In 1886, at the urging of Emma Dryer and several Chicago residents, D.L. Moody founded the Moody Bible Institute from his desire to have “gap-men to stand between the laity and the ministers…Take men that have the gifts and train them for the work of reaching the people.” The Education Branch, with campuses in Chicago, Spokane, WA, and Plymouth, MI, now includes an undergraduate school, theological seminary, aviation program and a distance learning program.

Moody Publishers was started in 1894 as Moody’s response to a lack of affordable Christian books. By the time D.L. Moody passed in 1899, 1.5 million books had been sold and current profits from Moody Publishers continue to be funneled back to the Education Branch to support the students’ tuition-paid education. Current key authors include Dr. Gary Chapman, Nancy Leigh DeMoss and Tony Evans.

In October 1925, a storm opened the door for two cornet-playing Moody students to fill a time slot on Chicago radio station WGES. Months later, Moody launched WMBI, the oldest non-commercial Christian radio station in the country. Moody Radio now provides programs—including Midday Connection, Chris Fabry Live! and In the Market with Janet Parshall—to more than 400 affiliate stations. It also owns and operates 35 stations with a Christian perspective on the news, teaching and music.

Additional ministries of Moody include conferences and Today in the Word. Moody’s conferences feature inspiring Christian teachers and offer training opportunities across the country for men, women, pastors and couples so that they might more effectively fulfill the Great Commission. Today in the Word is a free daily devotional that also offers additional online and radio resources for enriching readers’ faith journeys.

In 2009, Dr. Paul Nyquist was inaugurated as Moody’s ninth president and 2011 will mark our 125th Anniversary. We remain committed to the mission and vision cast by D.L. Moody as everything at Moody falls under the authority of the Bible, which declares timeless truth that is relevant today. The Word of God cannot be contained and we must proclaim its truth.
