Key Ministry Leaders Stand with Hobby Lobby, Conestoga

Manassas, VA – The NRB Board of Directors, a body of nearly 100 key leaders in faith-based media, unanimously resolved to stand with Hobby Lobby and Conestoga Wood Specialties in their “David-and-Goliath” struggle for freedom to be argued before the U.S. Supreme Court this week.

In this Resolution, the leaders of the NRB Board recognized, “Both cases involve claims by faith-based, closely-held, for-profit companies,” and that the Executive Branch is seeking to force them, “in violation of their Biblical beliefs, to make available to their employees and their family members, insurance coverage that would include abortion-inducing drugs and services.”

As private businesses, Hobby Lobby and Conestoga Wood Specialties do not fall under the narrow religious exemption of this federal mandate, so they would be required to include such coverage when their health plans renew or face exorbitant and potentially fatal federal fines for their refusal to comply.

Dr. Jerry A. Johnson, President & CEO of NRB, declared, “We stand with Hobby Lobby and Conestoga, and against Obamacare, for the sanctity of human life and the First Amendment freedom to live out that conviction. Christian business owners like the Greens and the Hahns should not be forced by the government to violate their religious beliefs by providing for abortion.”

In addition to urging the Supreme Court to uphold the free exercise rights of these two family businesses, the NRB Board also called on NRB members “to pray for the Justices of the United States Supreme Court that they may render just decisions which provide constitutionally sound and robust protections for the exercise of religious freedom in America.”

The full text of the 2014 NRB Board Resolution on these pending Supreme Court cases is available online here. More details about the leaders comprising the NRB Board are here. Also, NRB’s Office of General Counsel filed an Amicus Curiae (“Friend of the Court”) brief in this case arguing for appropriate “breathing room” for religious freedom. Find that brief online here.

Hobby Lobby is being defended by the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty before the Supreme Court, and Alliance Defending Freedom, an NRB member, and allied attorneys are representing Conestoga Wood Specialties.
