Award Criteria

  • Radio Awards (must be NRB members and self-nominations are encouraged)

    Rado Station of the Year (Major Market)
    The radio station should be innovative, locally-focused, and should effectively impact a market of more than 3 million in POTENTIAL population through community service, promotions and marketing, outreach, ratings, and/or other means.

    Radio Station of the Year (Large Market)
    The radio station should be innovative, locally-focused, and should effectively impact a market of more than 1.5 million but less than 3 million in POTENTIAL population through community service, promotions and marketing, outreach, ratings, and/or other means.

    Radio Station of the Year (Medium Market)
    The radio station should be innovative, locally-focused, and should effectively impact a market of more than 500,000 but less than 1.5 million in potential population through community service, promotions and marketing, outreach, ratings, and/or other means.

    Radio Station of the Year (Small Market)
    The radio station should be innovative, locally-focused, and should effectively impact a market of less than 500,000 in potential population through community service, promotions and marketing, outreach, ratings, and/or other means.

    Air Personality of the Year (Music Format)
    The personality is compelling, relevant, informative, personable, and entertaining, while demonstrating an authentic Christian faith in their on-air announcing.

    Air Personality of the Year (Talk Format)
    The personality is compelling, relevant, informative, personable, and entertaining, while demonstrating an authentic Christian faith in their on-air announcing.

    Radio Program of the Year (Long Form)
    The program must be at least five minutes in length and must impact the listener by being compelling, relevant, informative, personable, and entertaining, while demonstrating an authentic Christian faith.

    Radio Program of the Year (Short Form)
    The program must be less than five minutes in length and must impact the listener by being compelling, relevant, informative, personable, and entertaining, while demonstrating an authentic Christian faith.

    Impact Award 
    The award highlights a person, station, or network who uniquely impacted their market (or beyond) through an activity, program, event, invention, etc. that extended far beyond the standard involvement, expectations, or accomplishments of the Christian radio industry. This award is designed to recognize the “behind the scenes”people and organizations that often go unnoticed or unrewarded for their outstanding and unique efforts.

  • Television Awards (must be NRB members and self-nominations are encouraged)

    Television Station of the Year (Full Power)
    Station must display innovative and creative programming through its daily schedule, demonstrate sound financial decisions, be a force for the Gospel in its coverage oflocal Christian events, issues and stories, demonstrate a commitment to produce local programming to meet the spiritual needs of people within the TV station'sbroadcast area, and work in partnership with local churches and ministries to provide a media platform for voices unable to be heard elsewhere.

    Television Station of the Year (Low Power)
    With an understanding of budgetary restraints and broadcast limitations, the low power station should display innovative and creative programming through its dailyschedule, demonstrate sound financial decisions, be a force for the Gospel in its coverage of local Christian events, issues and stories, demonstrate a commitment toproduce local programming to meet the spiritual needs of people within the TV station's broadcast area, and work in partnership with local churches and ministries toprovide a media platform for voices unable to be heard elsewhere.

    Best Television Talk Show
    The Best Television Talk Show should deal with important issues of the day, have guests who are engaging, authoritative and able to communicate effectively, engage the culture in a compelling way, demonstrate fidelity to the Word of God (including sound doctrine and Biblical teaching), and demonstrate an ability to embrace other ministry organizations in an effort to expand a Christ-centered influence in the culture.

    Best Television Teaching Program
    The Best Television Teaching Program should demonstrate creative use of the teaching format, adhere to sound doctrine and Biblical integrity as stated in the NRB Statement of Faith and Code of Ethics, and be uniquely innovative in presentation of the Gospel.

    Best Television Special Programming
    The Best Television Special will demonstrate a unique vision and perspective of an important current issue, display the highest standards of quality, creativity and innovative content, engage the culture as an effective witness from a Christian perspective, and show a compelling use of the medium from artistic and technical standpoints.

    Best Television Youth Program
    The program should be targeted at reaching youth between the ages of approximately 13-28. The program should seek to evangelize and/or disciple youth in a manner that is culturally relevant , but at the same time does not compromise an authentic Christian witness. The program should deal with topics, situations, and themes that are commonly experienced by young people and the resolution(s) are consistent with the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The program should demonstrate a creative and innovative use of the television medium from artistic, technical, and communicative standpoints.

    Best Television Children's Program
    The program should be targeted to reaching children between the ages of approximately 3-16. The program should demonstrate it is designed to meet the FCC Educational/Informational (E/I) standards for Children’s Programming. The program should be creative and innovative in the manner in which it communicates to its intended audience. The program should deal with themes, issues, and topics that children are dealing with in an age appropriate manner while demonstrating fidelity to the Word of God. The program should effectively engage children with the message of the Gospel by using the television medium from artistic, technical, and communicative standpoints.

    Best Television Music Program
    The program shall largely seek to evangelize the lost and/or disciple believers through the performance of music. The program length may be as short as a single song as in a music video, or may be as long as a full length music program that may last up to an hour or more. The music presented in the program shall adhere to sound doctrine and biblical integrity as stated in the NRB statement of Faith. The music shall be of the highest quality possible from a performance standpoint. The music type(s) in the program should effectively communicate the Word of God by using the television medium from performance, technical, and communicative standpoints.

    Best Television Commercial
    The commercial shall not exceed 30 seconds in length and shall commercially promote a product, service, or organization. While the commercial content does not need to be evangelistic or of a discipling nature, the product, service, or organization that the commercial promotes shall be wholly consistent with the Christian world view. The commercial should be creative, innovative, and its call to action should be memorable to its intended audience. The commercial should effectively engage the audience by using the television medium from artistic, technical, and communicative standpoints.

    Best Television Public Service Announcement
    The Best Television Public Service Announcement award will go to the organization that produces a PSA that is designed to educate and inform the general public about a free public service that is offered by a Christian non-profit organization. The award will represent the best in technical quality, creativity, and present a compelling message about a public service. The length of the PSA shall be no less than fifteen seconds and shall be no longer than two minutes.

  • Internet Awards (must be NRB members and self-nominations are encouraged)

    Best Broadcast Website
    This award honors the Internet website of a Christian radio or television station that shows excellence in design and content, is creative in presentation, and iseffective in helping fulfill the broadcaster’s mission.

    Best Ministry Website
    This award honors the Internet website of a ministry or content producer that shows excellence in design and content, is creative in presentation, and is helping fulfill the ministry’s mission.

    Best Use of Social Media
    This award is presented to a Christian radio station, television station, ministry or other Christian organization that through strategic planning has effectively used thetechnology of Social Media for promotion of a product, service or group thereby fulfilling the mission of the organization.

    Most Creative Online Initiative
    This award honors a Christian radio station, television station, ministry or other Christian organization that has used the world wide web in an imaginative or innovative way to advance their mission, message or project online.

  • International Awards

    International Individual Achievement Award
    This award is presented to a non-U.S. resident/citizen who demonstrates a strong personal commitment to proclaiming Christ through electronic media, working with integrity and faithfulness to influence a culture for Christ.  (Does not have to be an NRB member.)

    International Radio Ministry Award
    This award is to an organization based outside the United States that excels in radio or audio ministry, exercising integrity and faithfulness to the cause of Christ, while demonstrating unusual effectiveness in impacting the target culture with the Gospel. (Does not have to be an NRB member.)

    International Television Ministry Award
    This award is to an organization based outside the United States that excels in television or video ministry, exercising integrity and faithfulness to the cause of Christ, while demonstrating unusual effectiveness in impacting the target culture with the Gospel. (Does not have to be an NRB member.)

    International Innovation Award
    This award is to an organization based outside the United States that excels in innovative uses of electronic media in the proclamation of the Gospel of Christ.  (Does not have to be an NRB member.)

    International Strategic Partnership Award
    This award is presented to an NRB member that has forged an effective partnership with an indigenous ministry, marked by strategic planning and cooperation with indigenous co-workers, sensitivity to cultural distinctives, and an impactful Christian outreach in the target culture.

    International Impact Award
    This award is presented to a U.S.-based NRB member having a global impact for the cause of Christ through electronic media.

  • Intercollegiate Awards (must be NRB members and self-nominations are encouraged)

    Radio Station of the Year Award
    This award is presented to an outstanding student operated radio station. This includes over the air AM or FM stations, campus carrier stations, internet radio stations, cable radio stations and any other means of radio programming delivery to an audience either on or off the school's campus that would fit the definition of “station”. Radio stations that use professionals for programming, management, or talent (full time or part time) are not eligible. Professional involvement must be limited to teaching and advising students in the operation of the station. All applicants and schools must be members of NRB.

    TV Station of the Year Award
    This award is presented to an outstanding student operated television station. This includes over the air broadcast stations, campus cable stations, internet stations, community cable channel stations and any other means of TV program delivery to an audience either on or off the school's campus that would fit the definition of “station”. TV stations that use professionals for programming, management, or talent (full time or part time) are not eligible. Professional involvement must be limited to teaching and advising students in the operation of the station. All applicants and schools must be members of NRB.

  • Special Service Awards

    NRB Hall of Fame
    The National Religious Broadcasters Hall of Fame stands as a witness for current communicators, a showcase of warriors for Christ who live exemplary lives of valor and compassion, blazing trails and leaving paths for succeeding generations to follow.  NRB's most prestigious award is presented to an individual NRB member for invaluable contribution to the field of Christian communications, exhibition of the highest standards and evidence of faithfulness in Christ.     William Ward Ayer Distinguished Service Award
    Pioneer broadcaster and pastor William Ward Ayer was NRB's first president.  Instrumental in the formation of the Association, Ayer drafted the Code of Ethics that formed the basis of evangelical response to the radio networks' threat against religious broadcasting in the 1940s.  This award is presented to an individual or organizational NRB member with excellence and integrity for outstanding and significant contributions to the field of Christian communications.

    Board of Directors Award
    The Board of Directors award honors a Christian who demonstrates integrity, displays creativity and makes a significant impact on society. In recognition that broadcasting is not the only way to witness to the power of the Gospel, the award winner may or may not be in the field of electronic communications.

    Milestone Award
    Longevity in any field is becoming a rarity, and exemplary service in Christian broadcasting for 50 years -- or more -- is a feat worthy of recognition and applause.  NRB desires to honor the industry pioneers who brought Christian communications to the place of respect and achievement it enjoys today. (Must be an active or retired NRB member.)
